If you ask ten New Yorkers how long it takes to get from Midtown to JFK, you'll get ten different answers — and they're all right, on different days. Here's how Koch Limo chauffeurs actually time JFK runs, based on thousands of trips a year.
The short answer
Leave Midtown 2 hours before a domestic departure, 2.5 hours before international. Add 30 minutes for any weekday departure between 3pm and 7pm. Subtract 15 minutes on Sunday mornings before 9am.
Hour-by-hour drive times: Midtown → JFK
- •4am–6am: 30–40 min (the sweet spot)
- •6am–9am: 45–60 min (rush in your direction)
- •9am–noon: 40–55 min
- •noon–3pm: 45–60 min
- •3pm–7pm: 60–90 min (worst window)
- •7pm–10pm: 40–55 min
- •10pm–midnight: 35–45 min
Which route?
Most JFK runs go via the Midtown Tunnel → Long Island Expressway → Van Wyck. When the Van Wyck is jammed (it often is), we shift to the Belt Parkway via the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway — adds a couple miles but can save 20 minutes in the wrong-hour window.
Terminal matters
Terminal 4 (Delta) and Terminal 8 (American) get the heaviest curbside drop-off congestion. For international departures from Terminal 1, budget 10 extra minutes for the long curb walk. JetBlue's Terminal 5 is fastest in and out.
The Koch Limo rule
We time every JFK departure to put you curbside exactly 2 hours before a domestic flight, 2.5 hours before international — no more, no less. Real-time traffic, real-time flight status, no padding for padding's sake. Book your JFK transfer at (201) 552-8547.
